For those whom have started reading the book, what has your first impressions been?

I started it last night and found it very descriptive, definately written by a romantic with all the honeystuckle and hazel Laughing

I am only a few pages in, but hopeing she will give more background to some of the characters, the only one she has really touched on so far is Irina. Enjoying it so far though Smile

I'm quite a bit further on so I know that she does indeed give more background to other characters. The character development is actually really impressive. I won't go into detail, but I think Lewycka quite cleverly turns your first impressions on their head - unsympathetic or two dimensional characters are given understanding and depth.

What are your impressions of Irina at the moment?

I also love the subtle humour in the book, definitely my wavelength.

The author seemed to put a lot of focus on the fact that she is pretty at first, more so than the other girls, then reading about how she came to be a strawberry picker...my initial thoughts were pretty but probably a little naive and a hopeless romantic, not just about love but life in general.
